Snow....and a new companion!

Hey y'all! How are y'all doing? Man I didn't know the whole family was going over to Hawaii! I think you might have left that part out haha. It looks like a lot of fun over there. Tell everyone hi for me and soak up the great weather, because it is freezing here. So you may be wondering why I titled this email Snow. Well that is right. We went up to Luling for our district meeting. It is about 45 minutes away and in the bayous. It is really cool, but there was a little bit of snow on the cars. It has been so cold here the past weekend. Today it has just been raining nonstop and super humid. Luckily it is starting to warm up again. The last time it snowed down here was 10 years ago and the next year Hurricane Katrina happened... So who knows we could be having something happen this year.

Alright so I know you guys are really excited to find out about my new companion. His name is Elder J.  He is SUPER awesome. I like him a lot. He is actually a visa waiting.  So he will go to Brazil when he gets his visa. So in the mean time he was assigned here in LA speaking english. He is going to be speaking Portuguese. So since I am training him we also have to do language study! So we have 4 hours of studies every morning.. Talk about a tiring morning. We do personal study and then companionship study and then what is called 12 week. It is a training program for the first12 weeks for the new missionaries. And then we do an hour of Language. I am going to try and pick some of it up. That would be cool. I have picked up a little bit of spanish and hopefully portuguese! He is from Colorado. He is 19 and likes sports. He played 4 years of golf!1 So I knew right when I found out we would be companions that we would be good friends. We are going to try and play sometime soon. He comes from a family of 10. He has had 4 older brothers serve missions. He is a good kid. I have really enjoyed training. It has made me have to be even better so I can set the best example I can for him. We have really been getting along well one with another. He likes to work and is really motivated. We had 12 lessons in 4 days. So we are going to be able to work super hard together.

I didn't do anything really for my 6 month mark.. I was going to burn a tie, but then ended up not doing it. It honestly just felt like another day haha! It was a good day though! Hey I can't believe David proposed!! That is crazy!!! I am excited to see the video. He sent me some pictures! She looks like a cute girl. I am excited to meet her.

We also have still been painting houses and doing crazy amounts of service. Last week we had an incredible lesson with Sister M.  I teared up baring my testimony to her and I know she felt the Spirit. She is slowly going to start making progress again. She committed to pray and ask Heavenly Father if the church is true and if it is what she needs to do. We will follow up with her tomorrow. She had some concerns with Prophets and we were able to clear that up with her. Another really cool experience is we have been helping this nonmember family with service and things like that. The guy used to speak at churches and the mom just loves us and always feeds us when we come over. We went over there on Saturday night and were finally able to give him a Book of Mormon and bear testimony of it. We are going over there again this week and check up on him and his wife and see how they are doing. I have a good feeling about this one. We have been seeing so much success with planting seeds and seeing people start to change. Now it is just time to start harvesting. I know that is what will happen really soon.

Alright to answer some of your questions. The Spanish elders are still living with us. Nothing has really changed there. Elder A.  got transferred to WestBank Spanish!! So he is still in the same branch and I see him every weekend. So that is super nice! Our district has expanded. We now have 2 Luling Elders and 3 Luling Sisters. So our district now has 11 people in it.

( Westbank Apartments on Weekends )

I did not get your package... We were not home on Saturday. and we won't be homeuntil tonight. Hopefully they will deliver it today and give it to the office. I am not home really on Saturday - Tuesday. We are over at the westbank apartments.

Well I am doing great! I really like my new companion and I like training. We are working hard. I am seeing a lot of successes. The biggest success is how much I have changed. I feel different. My testimony is exploding. I want to share the Gospel with everyone and when people like sister M. don't accept it, it really breaks my heart. That was the hardest thing last week. I asked sister M.  if she would come back and she said not yet and she doesn't know when. I kind of broke down. I love the people down here. I know they have their agency and they can choose for themselves, but it is hard. I just want people to flock to the fonts! haha I have really focused this week in my studies in the Book of Mormon. I was in the last part of Mosiah. It is where the people were having hardships and felt really heavy burdens. It said how Heavenly Father let them feel those burdens for only a moment. Then He blessed them mightly and saved them from their hardships. That is just like everyday life and expecially missionary work. We have to experience those hardships so we can feel the joy after we accomplish them with the Lord. He loves us so much and is always there for us. It is just like the story of the footprints in the sand. I love that. I know this church is true. I know the Book of Mormon to be the word of God. I love my calling and I love serving people. I love how we all are examples and people can see a light about us.

Well Y'all have a great week and enjoy the sunshine! I hope I get your package really soon! I miss you guys like crazy. Keep up the good work and keep on smiling! I love you guys!!

Love Elder Smith

PS.  Do you mind if I go buy some more nike pants. I wear mine everyday. I love them so much more. They are so comfortable. They are like 80 bucks I think. Also I have been eyeing a jacket that would be nice to have. It is just a regular black jacket that is water and wind proof. It would keep me warm and then I wouldn't have to wear the big trench coat everywhere!! haha  I think that is like 90. Just let me know!

PSS. I love you guys!!

PSSS I love you Mom

President Wall Loves To Build Up The Suspense! 1/21/14

Hey Y'all!! Sounds like you are having a BLAST in Hawaii! That sounds so nice! This week we went over to the Phillips house and she is from Hawaii and she said she is very jealous! haha I would be too!

Mom and Dad you guys are so awesome... I love your example to me about all the missionary work you do. That is so cool about the family you met down there. I am glad you can talk about me and use it for missionary work. Heavenly Father works through his vessels and both of you are some of the best vessels I know. Thanks for your great example to me and to everyone in our family. I loved those pictures you sent me! The Islands look so amazing as usual! I actually had a dream about the Grand Wailea. It was a good dream. But don't worry I am still focused on the work here! haha

Alright so I know you are dying to find out about transfers.. Okay so it was last night we were about to go to the Hospital to give a member a blessing and our phone rang. I answered and Elder S. our district leader called and then he said I'll call you right back.. Our Zone Leaders were calling him. So it was seriously the longest wait of my life.. I just wanted to know so badly!! President Wall loves to build up the suspense! Then our phone rang again and I answered and Elder S.  asked if he could talk to Elder W.. So I gave him the phone and Elder S.  told him that he was getting transferred... So I am loosing Elder W... And I am staying here in Algiers.. I am going to miss him, But I am soooo happy I am staying here. I really love it here!! Then we went and gave the blessing and went back to go to bed.. Then this morning I got a call from President, but of course I was at the other guys apartment doing my laundry so I ran over and called him back, but guess what... He didn't answer.. Then the phone rang and I answered and it was President. He then went on to ask how I was doing and all that jazz.. Then he asked me a question.. He asked if I would be willing to be a trainer!! So I said yes!! haha so I will be training this transfer here in Algiers. I am really excited. It is going to be a great experience! So tomorrow we go up to Transfer meeting in Baton Rouge and I will find out my new companion then. This transfer is going to be huge!! Elder W. and A. are leaving.. And Elder O.  and then they are double transfering out the Westbank Spanish Elders. So 5 people are getting transferred.. Pretty crazy. I am super excited though to start something new.
I will let y'all know next week who my new companion is.

So this week was one of the busiest weeks I have ever had out here.. Guess how man service hours we had. 41!!! We painted sis M. porch and started on her neighbors house of scrapping the paint off and re-painting it. It has been such a good missionary project. Her neighbor is asking so many good questions about the church and we have been able to give her a Book of Mormon and also her brother in law. And with sister M. I was able to give her a really good lesson yesterday. I really felt like the Holy Ghost was there. I talked about faith and shared a couple of scriptures from both the Bible and the Book of Mormon and asked some spirit lead questions. I found out a lot more about her and what exactly she wants. The conclusion I came to is she never really had a strong testimony of the church, but of the people. She really loved the social part of it. So I committed her to pray and ask Heavenly Father if what we talked about yesterday was true and to know if this is what she needs to do. She said she would so I will check with her on Thursday. I have a lot of Faith with her. I think she is going to come back, it is just a matter of time. She pulled me aside yesterday and told me how her neighbor just loves me and how I am her favorite then sister M. said "mine too" haha. I just love her. We are going to have to come down and visit her when I get home! I will send some pictures when I am done with this letter.

\

This week was so spiritual. We had a member of the 70 come and speak with us. His name was Elder Perkins.. I could fill the spirit so strongly when he spoke. He talked a lot about faith. He also talked about how member missionary work is critical. He gave some really cool examples how the twelve Apostles talk about the gospel. They are so loving when they do it. They honestly talk to everyone. That is what we need to do. We can't be afraid. Talk to people at the groceries store, your waiters. Everyone! You don't want someone to come up to you in the after life and say hey why didn't you say something when you knew? I may not have accepted it, but I also might have. That has been my mind set lately. I am trying to share the Gospel to Everyone! I love it and I have seen so many blessings from it. Then we also had stake confrence on Saturday and Sunday. It was so good. President Wall spoke and he gave a great talk. I am lucky to have such a good mission President. Then on Sunday night I was able to do something really cool. I was able to go to a Catholic church with about 40 missionaries and sing for their program for Martin Luther King. It was really cool because they had over 10 different religions there to speak. It was cool to hear what they say. All of there religions have similarities to ours, and we can use that to talk to other people about the Gospel. We are not here to take down someones religion, but only build upon it.

Well that has been my week mostly. A lot of service and a lot of teaching. I am really happy though that I am staying here. I feel like I am not through here yet. I believe I can help Sister M. out even more. I called her last night and told her the news and she was so happy I was staying haha. It was cool.

My testimony has been strengthened so much this week on the power of prayer, faith, and the pure love of Christ. It has never been more clear to me on how true this Gospel is. I love it! Thanks for standing by me at all times mom and dad. You guys are the best example. Mom Happy birthday again! I am glad you liked your present! haha Well tell everyone hello from me and that I love them! You all are the best!! have a great week and keep on smilin! Love ya!!

More Service! - 1/16/14

Hey there everyone! Mom and Dad I am happy you guys are getting out of
the cold and going to go hang out in Hawaii. We have had some really
good times over there. I agree... A family trip there when I get home
sounds great to me! Dad don't worry, I am not trunky because you guys
are going to paradise! You've got to go spoil mom for her birthday
since she always spoils us! Hey eat a Ruth's Chris steak for me! And
take a bunch of pictures!

Well I am glad everything else is going so great. This week was a
pretty slow week. So to compensate that guess what we did?? Yup you
got it.. Service! :) We ended up having a lot of member lessons to.
We had 7 member lessons and a couple less active lessons. Then we met
with Sister M. It was really funny actually. We were over there
sanding down her front porch because we are going to repaint it. And
as we were doing that a FedEx truck came driving up. I didn't think
anything of it at first, but then I looked closer to the box that the
guy was bringing towards us. It looked just like a box from shipping
that we would use to send out brochures. Then I looked closer and it
said Get Away Today on it. It was really cool! Then Sister M. got it
and she said what is this and I said I think it is from my parents!
She said oh that is so sweet. She thought it was really cool it was
from Ogden UT. Then she had me open it with my knife. She opened it
and saw the cookies and was so happy! Then she read the letter to
herself so I have no idea what it said. What did you guys tell her?
She seemed really happy though. Then later on she feed us some red
beans and rice with corn bread and then for dessert she gave us a
little bit of those cookies. They were really good! So I think it
really made her day. She is such a great lady. She did not attend
church again this week.. She loves us to death, but for some reason
she does not want to go to church.. It breaks my heart.. Every Sunday
I am so excited to see if she comes, but then she doesn't show up.. It
is really tough. But everyone has their agency. SO that was the whole
story with Sister M. We are not giving up on her. Right now we have
been trying to find others to teach. So far we have just been planting
seeds. I know if we keep working hard we will find more people. We did
have 4 dinners this week. It was super nice! It had been a little
while. On Monday we went to Bro N.  and he fed us some pizza. Then on
Tuesday we went to the G. and they fed us some red fish with red beans
and rice. Then on Thursday it was one of my favorite little guys
birthday. Sam N. He invited us to come to his birthday party. It was
just us him and his parents. They took us to Chucky Cheese.  We ate
pizza and played games with Sam. It was really fun then we went back
to their place and had cake. It was a super fun day!

Alright I had something really cool happen this week. We had district
meeting on Friday and Elder S. asked me if I could come in gym
clothes.. I knew exactly what was coming. Alright so there is this
story about a seminary teacher who asked a kid in his class if he
would come up to the front of the class and do push ups. The kid
talked with the teacher before hand and agreed to do it. So the
seminary teacher went on. He brought in donuts and treats. All the
kids were so excited. Then the teacher went around the room and one by
one started to ask the kids if they wanted a donut. The first one said
yes. The teacher put it on their desk and told the kid up front to do
10 push ups. Then the teacher went on to the next kid and they said
yes and the teacher said 10 more pushups. This happened until about
the 10th kid in. By this time the kid up front doing push ups was
starting to struggle. The teacher offered a donut to the 10th kid and
the kid said no I don't want it. The teacher put in on his desk anyway
and told the kid to do 10 more pushups. The teacher kept going and the
kids were starting to feel really bad. Some even asked if they could
do the pushups for him. Some kids came in late and the whole class
told them not to come in! But the teacher said come on in and have a
donut. By this time the kid up front was sweating and was shaking on
each pushup. He could hardly do it anymore. The kids in the class
started crying and telling the teacher to stop. But the teacher kept
on going. Finally when the teacher had gone around the room and the
kids all had their donuts, most of them untouched, the teacher got up
infront of the class and said this represents the Savior and his
suffering for us. So the kids who ate the donuts partook of the
atonement, but the kids that didn't did not partake of it. Even though
it was sitting on their desk right in front of them. The Savior still
did everything for us. He gave his life so we would be able to return
and live again. So the point of this is we have the atonement and we
need to use it. So the kid in the front of the room doing pushups
represented the Savior. That was my job at District meeting. I did so
many pushups. I went until I couldn't do anymore.. It was a really
neat and spiritual experience. It just goes to show how important the
Atonement is. I know the Atonement is real. It is the power to get us
through our days. And it is always there for us. It is up to us to
reach our hand up and take hold of the Saviors hand because he is
always there for when we fall.

This week has been a good week. It got warmer. The beginning of the
week was in the 20-30s then it got all the way up to 70, but now it is
in the 50s and it is raining really hard. It has been raining all day.
I love the rain here. Except sometimes it becomes too dangerous on our
bikes so we have to be careful. The work here is great. I am really
trying my hardest to be spiritually led. This next week is going to be
super busy. On Friday a member from the 70 is coming to speak to us
then Saturday and Sunday we have stake confrence. So a lot of church
this next week! haha Tonight we are going over to one of my favorite
families houses. The P. She is from Hawaii actually! She will be
jealous when I tell her y'all are heading out today! You guys have fun
and be safe alright?? Hey since it is the 6th week of the transfer and
we find out if we are getting transferred on Monday don't send
anything out until I know for sure alright? I wouldn't want any other
Elders pigging out on those pinneapples and chocolates! I have not
sent out my jacket yet... I will try this week. I will send it to the
office. Sorry it has taken me forever. I will send out more pictures
as well. And with my journal writing... It has not been the best.. I
need to get better. Luckily I have that audio recorder that I use and
I like that a lot. That is sweet you have been going up to Logan so
much. Tell Jason to keep his head up and to kick some trash! I am glad
I played golf too. Everything is just on you. I think that really
helped me for my mission too because you are out here and it is just
like I am playing 18 holes of golf. Right now I am on like the 5th
hole haha. I probably hooked it out of bounds... haha just kidding.

Mom thanks for those quotes. I really loved them. And good job
teaching your class! I knew you would hit it out of the Park! You
always do! Happy early birthday!!! I hope you have a great week over
in Hawaii!! How long will y'all be there? You guys are the best! I
love you, but I am not going to miss you.... Too much haha. Well that
is about it for this week. I am looking forward to this next week and
to tackle it. I have no idea what could happen for transfers. I could
stay here with W.  another one or leave or anything. I have no idea.
We will find out soon. Well tell everyone I love them very much! You
guys are the best! And mom Like you always say... Remember who you are
and what you stand for! and Return with Honor and Enjoy the Journey! I
love you guys!

Love Elder Smith

Happy New Years 2014! - Service, Service, Service - 1/06/14

Hey y'all! Hey mom and dad! HAPPY NEW YEARS!!! It is pretty crazy it is already the New Year. It does seem just like yesterday we were sitting in the Stake Presidents office getting set apart. It was a great year and I am looking forward to this year! It is going to be great! Last year I learned a lot and had so many great memories. All of those fun trips. The cruise, Flyin to Cali in style and going to San Fran and playing Pebble Beach. Lake Powell, Arizona, all of our fun trips. It was a great year as a family. I feel like we all grew so much closer. Then I feel like after July 24th 2013 I grew even more. I left everything I pretty much knew behind.  I left all of you. I left the comfort of Utah. I left golf, sports, friends, family, and boating. At first I thought man this is going to be tough, but then once I got out here I realized I did not leave everything behind. In fact I have everything I ever would need. I have the Gospel. That for sure came with me!  I have learned so much more about the Gospel. My testimony grew so much in 2013. I am excited to see how much more it grows in 2014. But I still do miss you guys! haha That will never go away. Well for new year’s we didn't do too much. Just played a little game of Monopoly. Then went to bed, but then we could hear all of the fireworks and we ran to go look outside from our balcony. It was really cool. Down here they do not have any restrictions on fireworks so everyone had them and they were going off everywhere. We could see the big fireworks show in downtown. It was really cool. I have a little video I will try and send it.

I am really excited for this new year. I have some goals I really want to accomplish. I think of the New Year as a fresh start. I am starting over and anything I felt like I didn't do as well as I should have last year I can do it this year. I kind of liken that to the Atonement. Whenever we come up short that does not mean we give up. It just means that we work harder the next time. So by the time I am 100 I hope I have perfected it! haha One of my goals is to lose myself completely in the work. It has been a pretty tough past couple of weeks. The work has been slower than ever. It is freezing outside. Like today it is 34 outside with humidity. That may not sound cold, but with only a little sweater on it just cuts right through you. We have had a lot of people decide they don't want anything to do with the Gospel anymore. We had one of our investigators named T. just dropped us. He said I really love what you guys are doing, but I am never going to change. I wanted to just smack him and set him straight! haha (I would never do that though don't you worry mom!) I have learned a lot this year that everyone has their own agency. You cannot force your believes on them, but you can help them along the way. Heavenly Father has a plan for us. It is just up to us to follow it. The biggest thing I have learned out here is Obedience brings blessings. It is so true. Even in the simplest ways I can see it. Just the other day I was on exchanges with my district leader. We were helping someone out in the branch with their bike. She got a flat and didn't have a spare. So I told Elder S. we should go to Dicks sporting goods and get her one. But before we left I felt like we should walk. I had no idea why I felt like that, but I acted on it. At first I thought why are we doing this. It is cold outside and it is pretty far away. But then when we were walking I noticed we were coming up to an older man that was walking by himself. Then we were right behind him and I saw he had on a retired veterans hat. I then just said Hey I like your hat! He turned around and said oh why thank you. Then I was able to start talking to him about what he did. He was in the Marines. He was stationed in a lot of different areas. He then just asked hey are you both Mormons? And we said yes! Are you familiar with our church? He said yes I am. I actually had one of your books. He said he lost it when Katrina hit. So we were able to talk to him about it a little bit. He then just asked us some questions. He was a super awesome guy. Then when we were about to part ways I asked if he wanted another book of Mormon. He said no.... I asked well why not? (Me trying to be bold...) haha He then went on to say how he was a member of a different church and he wasn't about to change his beliefs. So I asked if I could give him a pass along card. He accepted and told us he was going to check out the website. Then we both parted ways but while we were walking away he said thank you very much. Y'all made my day.. I have no idea what he might have been going through, but who knows maybe he prayed or something to receive some help or comfort. And Heavenly Father knew that and prompted me to just walk instead of ride our bikes. We planted another seed and helped someone out. So no matter what the prompting is you have got to act on it. That is another one of my goals is to act on the prompting of the Holy Ghost the first time. Not to be reminded.

Alright so the reason I titled this letter service, service, service is because we did more service this week than any other week. We had 31 hours of service. That is over a full day’s work of service. So what we did that required that much service was on Thursday we did our usual visits to 3 houses and helped them out.  Then after that I received a call from our branch President. He told us a new member was moving in and was needing help moving in. So I rounded up the troops and we had 6 missionaries there to help move this lady in. She had a lot of stuff to go into a small house. It was a lot of fun though. She just got a new dog. It was a baby German Shepard.... I want one now... The mission has settled it... Once I get home I am getting a dog no matter what! haha  Then on Friday we had exchanges and my district leader came over to Algiers. We worked our tails off. We had 7 lessons in 1 day! With 2 member present lessons. That never happens for us. There are just no members to come with us. So it was awesome. Then we got that call about the lady having a flat tire. So that took up about 2 hours because she didn't have a tool to get her bike tire off. That was pretty much all the service for that day. Then Saturday we got picked up early in the morning and went to downtown to help out the man who walked into the church last week. We went and helped him with his dad’s storage unit. It took us forever and it was hard work. There were a lot of things in there. Then we finished and they fed us a bunch of pizza and king cake. It was a great week. We had a lot of lessons and great finding opportunities and a lot of service and showing love to people. Then on Sunday the W. had us all over for Crawfish attufia. It was really good. Then had a really spiritual night. It was just a great week. Elder Willis and I have been getting along great as usual. We are working hard. And we are having fun while we do it. We are seeing the work move forward. We may not be harvesting yet, but we are for sure planting those seeds for later. I know they will harvest. It is just a matter of time.

Well I am glad Merlene’s funeral was beautiful. I thought about her a lot this week. It was pretty tough I won’t lie. I loved her. That is really cool that she had a picture of me sitting on her desk. Now I wish I had a picture of her to put on my desk. She is in a better place now. She is in no more pain. I love the fact that we are able to be with our families forever. That is what makes our Gospel so great. At least to me because you guys know how much I love you. You guys are my heroes.

That is awesome about the little boys coming up more! I miss those little guys and all my nieces. They are getting big that's for sure. I am proud of Dan too. That is so good. I bet he feels so much better. I am glad Ryan is doing great. That is funny about Scott I could just see him doing that! haha You've got to love our family. We sure know how to embarrass people! :) Especially my nieces!! I am glad Jason is playing well. I am stoked to be able to watch him play his senior year. And that is funny about Bryson coming to pick up Jane. I am glad he finally came up and saw you guys.

That is awesome you fasted for Sister M. Thanks you guys. She is struggling right now. I am excited to see her this week because I have got a good feeling about it. Even if she doesn't I still love her and I will not give up on her. She is awesome and I know she will come back. The people down here are great. I think it is funny. Whenever we start talking to people a lot of the times they will say "I am Catholic" thinking that we will just walk away. One thing I have been trying to do is show love no matter what. So when they say that I say Oh I love Catholics! Haha people think we look down on other religions. We are not here to destroy other religions, but simply build upon what they already have. We love everyone!! So that has been fun! :)

Mom you are too funny. You stress too much! You already are the BEST missionary mom a kid could ask for! Thanks for that mom. I really liked that passage you wrote from the missionary book you are reading. I like the quote “Be the kind of missionary your parents think you are”. Well I am not the best missionary in the world. No one is. I strive to be the best I can be. But the best missionary of all is the Holy Ghost. So while I am out here I have to strive to be as obedient as I can so I can have the Spirit with me to teach through me! It is just like what D&C says. 33:7-10. Open your mouths and they shall be filled. It is so true. I sometimes have no idea what to say, but I just trust the Spirit and start to testify. Half the time I don't remember what I even say. Oh another cool thing that happened this week. I was asked my Bro. N. if I could give him a Priesthood Blessing. He and his wife have been trying to have more kids. So I started and I honestly don't remember anything I said. But afterwards he was crying a little bit and gave me a big hug and whispered “that was exactly what I needed to hear”. He said thank you, but I told him don't thank me.. It wasn't me. It was Our Heavenly Father. It was so cool and I could feel the Spirit so close to me. I feel the Spirit so strongly out here. I was talking to Ryan about that. It is so true how close I am to the Spirit. I am dreading the day I get released because I hear you just notice something is not as strong. I want to always have this Spirit with me. It is so amazing and we all can have it, just by doing the simple things. Reading the Scriptures. Praying and attending church. I have such a strong testimony of this.
